Hi, Just seen some Copper Nickel brake pipe for sale and was wondering if this type of pipe is ok to use on a truck. I am needing some 30 feet of 5/16 to redo the brakes on my 51 Commer R7. On other projects I have always used steel bundy pipe but if this other stuff is better I will go with it. If anybody has used it and found it ok I would like to hear about it. The seller told me that it is used on trailers but could not tell me if it was ok for what I wanted to use it for. Any help much appreciated Graham

Probably better than bundy because it won't rust and easier to bend. Must not be allowed to vibrate as will be prone to work hardening and then stress cracking. Rare to see any tube these days in larger sizes. As it will have thick wall be careful about sizing. ie is old mate quoting external diameter instead of internal which is what counts.
Having said that get the final word from an expert on brake specs.

Best to give a brake joint a ring, certain materials can't be used.

If you look at ADR 42 or VSB6 (modification for heavy vehicles)

It might say the following;

Air Brake Piping should be manufactured to SAE J844 or equivalent.
• Air Brake Hoses should be manufactured to SAE J1402 or equivalent.
• Hydraulic Brake Piping should be manufactured to SAE J1047 or equivalent.
• Hydraulic Brake Hoses should be manufactured to SAE J1401 or equivalent.
• Flares for Tubing should be in accordance with SAE J5336 or equivalent.

Does the copper nickel pipe comply to SAE J1401?

copper nickel seems to be the go. Better than steel in every way I think I remember finding after research? Longer lasting, easier to form, very almost as strong when new, much stronger after a year or too...
