Hi Tatra, I say it'sa DAF, there was a connection between IH and DAF. I remember seeing Paystars with DAF engines and badges.    Jeff.

DAF/International connection is correct, RHD should provide further clues and no, as far as I know these never came to Oz...

There's asurprise, International sold UD CMA86/87 as International N1630/N1650, when they didn't have a model that could compete in the market place.

I don't know about the cabover DAF / Inter, but it certainly doesn't look right to put "DAF" onto the grille of an Inter Paystar.    Sacrilege! Would be like grafting a Kenworth badge onto.....say.....a Volkswagon cabin! Wink

G'Day All,

The solution to the riddle is as follows:

Many years ago, before PACCAR ever thought of acquiring any European truck manufacturers, van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek, otherwise known as DAF, had 33% of its shares bought by International Harvester (International was truly international back then - it also had controlling interest in Atkinson (UK/Oz) and Pegaso (Spain)). One of the results of the above was the DAF 2500NAT (the orange and green bonnetted truck Swishy posted), which was really an International's Paystar with the Dutch engine (but US axles and transmission (Fuller, which was offered in the "real" DAFs anyway), I believe. I don't know whether the chassis/cabs were shiped from the US or made from drawings in Holland...). I don't think the model was a huge success - it was only made for one year (1974-1975) - US made trucks (or ones paterned on them) rarely succeed in Europe (and vice versa), as condtions and regulations in the two continents are very different, but I'm sure you know that... The later bonnetted DAF (also posted by Swishy) is a different animal, an own development with no IH connections.

The "Dafstar" is relatively well known, but DAF and IH also collaborated on the COE model I posted, which was, I believe, marketed only in African countries. There was a choice of DAF and Cummins engines, Fuller and ZF boxes. I have no idea how many of these things sold or why they bothered - one would think it made more sense to export Aussi-made ACCOs to South Africa, for example, and LHD US made Transtars to the African countries where they drove on the left Undecided?

International and DAF parted ways in 1981.

Right, I'll go get some schnitzels.

Cheers,

T
