If you can identify someone who can freight east or south a  very reasonable rate there might be a few takers. Any chance of a picture or chassis number so we know what is on offer?. Rust in cab etc

Sorry for the vague description - I have put this up for my father Smiley

The ID plate reads as so:
Chassis No. L03142-241W02R
Engine No. 600-805T
No. 44
Leyland
Ley Motors
Leyland 21400

I don't have any pictures at the moment but will see what I can arrange.

There is a small section of rust in the cabin, however generally it is in reasonable condition.

Happy to receive phone calls. Please send me an email for a contact phone number chantelle.hutchison@gmail.com

Possibly a LAD Octopus,
engine number suggests a 600 leyland and these preceded the 680 power plus in the ergomatics.

The chassis number tells all ;
L is the year 1966, 24LWO is 24 ton series lightweight, 2R is tipper (14'9" wheel base) right hand drive. The 600 motor is standard for the lightweight as are 900R20 tyres (tho in Aus we would have used 900 X 20). Choice of 5 or 6(overdrive) speed gear box but some export ones got the 7 speed. It will have the 4 spring non reactive suspension, probably with a 6.25 diff ratio, with option of 7.712 or 5.55. The power divider is lockable. It will have power assist steering and clutch and the conventional handbrake is assisted with air booster. I don't think the lightweight version carried over to the 26 ton series ergo cab models.
So it is a very late model LAD cab Octopus.

Gee Steve you certainly have the right reference books and a good memory as well.  If it is a LAD cab it would be the same as your LAD Octopus you put pics up of maybe 2 years ago. They were a good bit of engineering.  If it was an Old MSB truck from Sydney then i know hwere it's JB Talr crane is. They tod me the leyland truck it sat on went to Lightning Ridge to put a concrete mixer on.  Might be the same.

I am about to start a project with a similar model vehicle. I would like to know if there are going to be photos available and the general condition of cab and chassis.

Hi Gillo

Lang will take some photos (and I am assuming will share them) once he has visited the truck.

If you would like to discuss details such as the general condition etc send me an email (chantelle.hutchison@gmail.com) and I can provide a contact number. My father is the best one to chat to!

Cheers

I might stand to be corrected on that build date as Mike from NZ tells me on good authority that the L prefix to the chassis No means that there was a local chassis modification (ie by importing country agent). I will check out further on build date letters.

Here are the photos of the Leyland. Not Lightning Ridge but a more remote opal field 70km west.

As described it is only for parts unless you are really keen. Chassis, cab etc are pretty good and rust free but quite a number of parts are missing.

There is a local crane and truck operator who runs to coast.

all enquiries to advertiser.

Just had three blokes from the Albion club in Scotland visiting. This truck is an ALBION! apparently these 8 wheelers are very rare anywhere in the world. Leyland put their own badge on them just before they shut shop on Albion.

These guys looked at the photo and immediately said the axles are unique to Albion as well as the chassis and other fittings up the front.

Whoever is looking for parts better think about restoring this one and not scrapping it.

Well that is amusing, I looked at this photo the other day and thought gee that looked alot like the cab and rear suspension on my old Albion.....but I figured that the badge doesn't lie and that all you fellas know far more about them than I!!!

The visitors might know their Albions but not Leylands which were built in another country (England). They also saw a heap of working Cameronians near Gunnedah and got over excited about them so probably hadn't recovered by the time they saw Lang. The rear hubs are indeed Albion, but they are attached to leyland axles, with 3rd diff in the front axle. If they were CA81 Albion Cameronians (which was effectively a Reiver with an extra steer axle) the power divider would be in a relay box amidships, and they would have 8 stud wheels. And it would have a 400 or 401 motor. The non reaction rear suspension was an Albion design but was used by both. The LAD cab was shared by Leyland/Albion/& Dodge, hence the abreviation. See my earlier post to explain the chassis No.

Mammoth, please look at my flickr site and ... tell me more about FH640...?  I viewed this Jan 2011, when I photgraphed it. The owner did not know the 'historic' side of it, but was great to talk with.

Cheers
