Just thinkin about the ERF pic that asw put up..........
Many moons ago ERF had their sales & service on Woodville Rd Villawood, NSW
a bit north of the old IPEC depot (that is now the Villawood detention Centre).........
A bloke by the name of John Sodotti was the service manager.
I was workin at Cummins Lansvale at the time, & had to go to ERF to see why
this new ERF with a 250 Cummins was blowin a whole heap of smoke.
The truck had been sittin around for a while ,then was bought, so they moved
it into the workshop to do whatever was wanted by the customer &
it took a day for the smoke to clear so they could see it.
Now bearing in mind it was new I asked if anything had been done to it ..........
No I was assured, its only been moved around the yard a couple of times.
OK........so fires it up......an instant smoke screen goes up.
So does the simple things like ckeckin the oil level ......ok
whips out the air cleaner element ......looks ok..........fires it up with the element out....
still smoky..... pulls the intake piping off the inlet manifold,.....ok
fires it up .....still smokey.........Pulls the inlet manifold off...fires it up. still smokey.
Bloody hell........what do I do next............grabs a torch.....fires it up & looks
into one of the head inlet ports...... whats all this oil sprayin around.....looks
in the other two heads ....its the same.
So I loosens a rocker cover a bit & gets someone to fire it up.......theres oil
goin every where. Shuts it down & off with the cover to have a bo peep.
A Har.....The rocker shaft locating screws (which doubles as an oil supply to
the Jacobs brake ...as I recall......) could be the culprit.
So I then ask the 40 thousand dollar question........you reckon the engine
wasn't touched...........well..........did it ever have a Jacobs on it ?
Blank stares all round..........then some one says ,,,hang on a minute.......
what about that truck we fitted a Jacobs to a while back............
where did it come from...........WELL I says .....next time you remove a Jacobs
from an engine, make sure you block off the oil supply holes.
So what was happening, was ,the oil spray was finding its way into the
inlet ports via the breather holes,(these holes are blocked off on Turbo equipped donks to
stop boost entering the crankcase)
I then blocked off the supply holes, slapped every thing back together & choofed off.
.......................Billy.......................

I CAME INTO THIS WORLD WITH NOTHING & STILL HAVE MOST OF IT.........................

I used to be a truck driver,
but i am now not a truck driver ,
on a good day i can remember
that i used to be a truck driver.

While I am still in the mechanical frame of mind
One time at Cummins the chief calls me into the office & says ..here is a little
field service job for you.
A front end loader, C160 donk, has a problem with injectors continually carboning up.
Their fitter changes them & our pump room services them, each report claims
excessive carbon build up as the problem.
The donk is in good nick.....uses virtually no oil.........no body can figure out why the
carbon build up........so go to it. my boy.
On the drive to the mine site I am thinkin what the hell am I going to do ................
At the mine work shop the loader is waiting for me.....I walk around it as though
I know what i am doin, while every one looks on.
Oil looks ok .... does an air intake restriction test ..that's ok
then an exhaust restriction test which proves ok
fuel pump pressure test ok
No crankcase blow by.
the operator takes it for a run......no doubt about the smokey exhaust ....
pulls the spin off fuel filter off & looks inside it , every body notes that it
looks nice & clean So..........I gives it a coupla hearty whacks against a post
& instantly the fuel inside turns jet black, amazing they all say...it sure doesn't
look too clear now.
So I say ,what does this mine produce............coal they all say,
And what is coal made up of......................carbon, they all say
Well it looks like if you clean the coal dust out of the fuel tank , then fit a filter of
sorts to the tank breather.it may over come the injector carbon up problem.
I put a S/E set of jeccies in that i had with me & left them to clean the tank out
& fit a filter to the tank breather.
Never heard from them again, so I am thinkin that must have been the trouble.

Looks like it works ok but now I cannot delete the post...............
one thing that happened was the pic didn't show on preview
it only showed after submitting.
In the info it says a 3 mb max size.....would I be right in saying
most pic sizes will be under that. so do we now forget about
the 800 / 600 pixle size bit...............
I should have put this post in the appropriate section.........sorry about that..........

Motors blowing smoke had one on a tractor once nothing as technical as yours took me a while to find grey smoke and wouldnt rev grey smoke 30 feet into the air straight up and then like a mushroom cloud hmm summer fuel in the middle of winter I'll let it run to warm the fuel while I hose out the cow yard and wash the milking machines still no better so better look a bit closer find some great big rats ass'es sucked into the inlet once I finally un ratted the intake she worked a treat LOL BLOODY FARMERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Billy and Paul,
I had much the same problem trying to delete a post that 'went wrong'. Seems like it's set up in such a way that you can EDIT but not REMOVE a posting, only the administrators can do that/
BUT.................I.D.S.T.B.C.
I suppose it makes one stop and think before making outrageous statements! Get it right the first time? Or, if your like me, have some wild half-assed guess and wait to be corrected!

Im pretty sure this is the reason had some problems some years back some people would make some wild remarks and get people fired up then pull the remark down leaving people cranky so this stopped the rot at least thats my understanding
And the truth is no one really cares about gramma or spelling and most of us get what someone else is trying to say anyway so we blunder thru it all no problem at all or at least I think we do
