Both spellings were used at various times. Original meaning was said to be the combination of two Aboriginal words 'balla' (meaning either elbow, or leaning on your elbow) and 'arat' (meaning place) - hence the double 'a'. I guess this means also that the city is an appropriate place to have a rest and bend your elbow, but do we have to drink VB, or will something else suffice? :D

Here's a little enamel number plate (probably off a taxi or bus) among some of its mates in my friend's collection:


Anyway, we're being presumptuous. Swishy's picture might not be Ballarat/Ballaarat. Probably some replica at a Gold Coast theme park. ;)
