Swishy we know all you Victorians froth at the thought of being at whitehaven in the winter.....but not the answer.
Gryphon got close enough to the area to deserve a drink and Dodgey got the name of the area, grab a drink from your fridge!
Cape Flattery (named by Captain Cook in 1770) is the largest silica mine in the world. It has been pillaged by Mitsubishi since the 1960s and after a recent upgrade and expansion now exports silica to Japan and China to be returned to us in the form of high grade solar panels. The photo was taken from the south western corner of their mining lease looking west, the sand reserves are enormous

Jeez Smithy you are making these too easy. That's around Timber Creek heading towards Kununurra on Highway 1. The late winter of 1982 I reckon. See all the moths on the top screen but a lot less below so maybe September. Smokers had to get off the bus and still using tarps on the trucks. The driver has tight shorts and long socks, That was the uniform.
Hope it helps someone.

Great starts. I loved the use of the splattered moths as a clue.
August, not September. Yes, 1980s.
More tomorrow.

From the available clues, Terry gets the credit.
Eyre Highway, WA, a few hours east of Salmon Gums (the breakfast stop).
I was catching a bus home from Esperance because there was an air strike.
This stop was to inspect that panel damage. As we were overtaking a car, it drifted across and sideswiped us. The damage was sufficiently minor that we continued.
The usual prize and and pleasant duty to Terry.
I have one which I regard as giveaway as standby if the quiz stalls for 5 days.

Hi,
I wouldn't say I got this one, I was in a different state about 1500km away. The give away from the original photo is the colour of the dirt on the edge of the road being white, pretty much makes it the Eyre Highway as the majority of highway roads in Australia are on red dirt. And the road is relatively high which suggests it is near a flood plain.
The only stretch of road I can find that looks similar a couple of hours east of Fish Lips is just out of Norseman near Lake Brazier.
