It's about the only time I've managed to find the usb port on my crystal ball!. What helped was reading the "Foden My Life with The Company" by Harold Nancollis a few months back. He detailed the development of the Foden screamer with a couple of photos. One stunt in 1953 was to fit two marine screamers into a former lifeboat and crossed the Atlantic and back - 9,000 miles and 1,500hrs of running without a hiccup. The biggest a 12 cylinder twin crank motor with 210hp continuous at 1,800. There are a couple of 6 cylinder marines in the Quirindi area which I have yet to see. For truck applications there were develpoments over the years and by 1964 the mk vll was developing 225hp.

Well the snow has gone and we have almost cloudless blue skies! so, it is out of the van and here are the pics:
I don't know a lot about these engines but they started as 4 litre and were increased up to 4.8 litre. This is a mk1 I don't know what power it should develop but being an ex navy marine engine is probably around 100bhp. The Royal Navy here had thousands of them as propulsion engines in harbour launches etc and driving generators etc. There are quite e few in preserved Foden lorries. There are two that I know of close to me. Were many of the Fodens imported to Australia fitted with them?
I think that 225hp was quite impressive from a 4.8l engine in 1964 when a Cummins of the same power was 14l and the 10l Gardner was developing 150hp. Were the Detroits turboed by then?

The Gardner was more common out here, I know the Melbourne Foden agent was a Gardner fanatic and would not willingly sell anything else.

The 6 cyl mk 1 developed 120hp @ 2,000rpm; 350 torques @ 1,500 and weighed 350lbs less than the equivalent, but lower powered Gardner 6LW. Seems they relied on military & naval orders to subsidise the automotive version and when orders started to dry up in the 70's they became too expensive.
Apparently that FD 12 turbocharged motor was used by marines in assault craft because it was the only engine around which could handle being thrown from forward to reverse at full revs. (can't really ask enemy to stop shooting while waiting for revs to die, change gear, then get going again)

Had it running at the weekend! took ages to prime the pump then fuel came through on one so tightened the pipe and it started firing then a second and third and it ran unassisted and then fuel came through one at a time on the remaining three. Sounds beautiful but don't know if my neighbours think the same!
