First clue, NSW.

I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.

Well done Swishy, even though its not in the Melway!

My first time on that road which was good on a motorcycle (so I did it both ways) but I never want to drive a truck through there. I can see why there's a truck driver's memorial site at the northern end.

Southbound when the freeway out of Sydney ended at Gosford and that was it to Brisbane the putty road was the pick of a couple of pretty shit options and anywhere in Sydney south of the creek coming in from the northwest it was your pick of the options, there was only the Harbor Bridge and everything was at Mascot, at least coming in from the west or north west you had a few options. Now when I do a loop up though the Putty and back home on my motor bike though Kandos, I still know it like the back of my hand and still love it. The only times it was a bit hairy was when the was a problem on the coast road and the putty was loaded up with learners. The big chrome thing threw me a bit I had seen it but thought I had seen it somewhere else, the rest of the old servo is a mess, there is some nut job there now doing barbeques sometimes, did a BMW bike club camping weekend there a couple of years just for old times' sake and I can tell you a sleeper is better than a tent

Putty road, doesn’t take long before you love it. I used to pick Brisbane over Melbourne every time, when I had the choice.

First time used it 1989, southbound with a 9 horse semi float. Swore never again!
Following year in, out, and in again on the one day with a 12 horse rig. Does seem Easier after a few trips. Amazed at the scrapes left by pans on some of the corners, high up on the rock faces.
Fun for some.

77Loui400, did you ever use the railway tunnel between Bylong and Kandos? Road was diverted through the tunnel until about 1980, when the Ulan Coal Railway was completed. Just had to watch out for fallen rocks. Saved climbing over the range there.

Yes, I have been through the tunnel but with my Dad in a Rootes group Commer (bonnet) going for a load of lucerne, Dad was a hay bloke, buy sell, bale, or do anything to make a dollar, maybe pounds back then.
