Today I want for a ride from Daylesford to Bullarto in a 1930's vehicle powered by not one but 2 GM 6-71's mounted side by side. Unfortunately it was only possible to photograph one of them.

The 2nd one is behind this one on the right. They are as close together as possible. The exhaust is not very long and the sound was incredible even at the just off idle speed we were traveling. A couple of hills gave a hint as to what they were like when working.

The engines also manages to shake the whole vehicle.

Now the quiz starts. What sort of vehicle was I in?

1st hint - they tow trailers and wagons

Ray was close but they hard Gardiners, 102, 153 or 280hp to be precise

it was a DERM - Diesel Electric Rail Motor. The railways have never thought truck motors were strong enough and have always mounted them in pairs. Not sure what is in the new passenger sprinters but they too have 2 motors. CRT Transport' cargo sprinter had 2 volvo truck motors at each end.

The sound was truck like and the drive had a piece of plywood between himself and the GM's so if you thought they were loud in your truck with sound proofing this had an exhaust pipe all of 5 ft long right behind you.

They shook the whole carriage. maybe worth a stop on a future HCVC expedition?
