The car that is recognised as the first car built in Australia, and run successfully, is the steam car built by brothers David and John Shearer at Mannum in S.A.
The Shearers commenced construction of the car in 1894, and it was first run successfully in 1897.
David Shearer regularly drove the car around Mannum and adjoining towns from 1897 onwards. It had a range of about 100 miles and was fueled by mallee roots.
It was driven to Adelaide in 1900, for display at the Adelaide Chamber of Manufacturers Exhibition .. whereupon, it required special dispensation from the city council to enter, as it was not allowed to enter the city, until a man with a red flag preceded it (as was the law in those days).
An important, and pioneering feature of the Shearer car was its differential fitted to the rear axle.
bparo is partly correct .. on the trip distance and locations .. but the Holmes/Thomson car did not do the trip that he mentioned, until April 1900. It, too, was also steam driven.
This particular car was not operational before July 1899.

This is BS!!!! .. I supply the details showing a car officially recognised as Australias first car .. with construction started in 1894 .. and operational by 1897!! ..
Yet .. you're claiming I don't get the CIGAR .. because YOUR pick, was started getting built in 1896 .. and wasn't tested until 1898!!! ..
You oughta become a pollytishun, Swish .. with this kind of prize-giving!! Who gave you the kickback, to jump a later car as the winner, over an earlier one!! .. :

onetrack can have it - I don't have swishy's book but it is mentioned in 3 I do have with 1896, 1987 and 1898 as the dates. One has a picture of the said vehicle at the Melbourne Show in 1989 (Ag show not car show obviously)
The run from Bathurst was in 1900 and it was one of a batch of 12 cars built until 1903 making it the first 'batch of production cars in Australia'. The Museum even has photos that record it as being completed in 1896 but that could be a typo or misread of someone's writing
