Pretty sure the right hand vehicle is a 6X6 C60X Chevrolet blitz (with GMC engine instead of the smaller Chevrolet). The RAAF had these well into the 70's.

The one on the left is almost certainly a 6X6 GMC (they had both banjo and split axles at various time during the war). Blitz only had single wheels (duals were all post-war mods by civilian operators to get legal load up although RAAF did modify a couple of Blitz to duals in the 50's but this is not one of those)

The aircraft is an AVRO York - the biggest cargo plane the Brits had during this period.

A bit more history...

The pic was taken in 1943 at 'No 6 Service Flying Training School, Mallala' about 75k North of Adelaide.
Wing Commander Abicair at Mallala, was father of Shirley famous Zither player.

For a history of the Avro York type, see
< en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_York> ;.
It seems that the only Australian example was a RAAF passenger version, used for the governor general.
See < www.airforce.gov.au/RAAFMuseum/research/...t/series2/A74.htm> ;.
It wasn't obtained until 1945, and so can't be the one in the 1943 photo.

The type didn't spread widely, in either military or civilian uses.
Perhaps is a RAF one on deployment or on a mission in Australia?
RAF would have had involvement with the 1950s missile trials at Woomera, but not as early as 1943.

Military: UK, Australia, South Africa & France.
Civilian: Aden, Argentina, Iran, Lebanon, South Africa & UK.
