Dont quite understand what you are saying, Are you putting it in 4wd on the road ? Cant do that with the older 4x4 vehicles as there is no centre diff.

Atkipete is right the steering wll drag and whells will lock on pavement or hard ground as the transfer case is trying to turn the front and rear axle at exactly the same speed, but the front and rear wheels need to travel different distances through turns and over bumps hence the dragging and locking on hard surfaces. In the dirt the slow wheels will just slip a little to catch up.
Plenty of parts still out there, but will help if we know where you are from.

Nuther problem could/would B
Unless u have the exact same size tyres front n rear u have gear bind up, where the front is tryn to tavel @ a different speed to the rear
other words
tiz try n to stretch the beast or shorten it
this puts g8 load on the gears n make it hard to disengage 4 wheel drive ( should B east to engage 4 wheel drive , once U line up the cogs by gently release n clutch in gear may B even rollin a little)
Ifn U get my drift
LOL

G'day Indianchief, The stuck transfer lever was more than likely just a case of "wind up" as Swish said. Normally the easiest way to get the lever to come out of gear is to go forward or reverse a few feet, failing that, just jack up one wheel to ease the strain in the driveline.

Idianchief,
Not sure about the setup on a 1310 but power steering from a 100 series Landcruiser is a relatively easy mod for the International Scout. Just need to drill an extra hole in the frame to mount the steering box.
