Identifying my diffs, was created by Peter CAMEL.
Hello members and guests. I hope someone can help me please. I'm at my witts end trying to identify and find out what the specs / rateings are for the diffs that are currently fitted to my 1980 ford Louisville LN 8000, bogie drive tipper..
the tag on the housings read as follows. - model= SHD NA 86, ratio=4.62:1 and there is a number 5 on the compliance place in the cab where its says differential. I'm not sure how to add a pic on here, but they are fitted to a Hendrickson suspension walking beam. And have spider hubs. With diff lock fitted to forward diff. I hope this is enough info to get me out of this headache I'm in, as no one can tell me what they are as in 44000lbs or 40000lbs or 38000lbs. I'm lost. I look forward a great outcome.. If you would like pics my email is petercamel62@gmail.com

Peter,i'm fairly certain that they would be 34,000lb rockwells.
How many Studs hold the Axles into the hubs??
34000lbs have 8 & 38000lbs have 10..
Crown Wheel pinion Power divider hemisphere ect are all interchangeble.
The only real difference is the; side gears, axles & hubs.. am unsure on the Housing though!

I think the 38000lb have 12 studs. However, when I took my diffs which have the 12 studs and I thought were 38000lb to have the ratio changed, Bayswater diffs confirmed that they were in fact 34000lb by the axle spline count, so there must be some anomalies out there.

According to a 1980 Rockewell specs list, the SSHD bogie is rated at 44,000lb,and can be identified both by SHD or SHR on the plates and by a housing section of 117 mm x 133 mm. and an axle spline size of 60 mm x 24 spline. The SLHD and SQHD have a section of 108 mm x 127 mm. with a spline of 51 mm x 21 and 54 mm x 22.

Oilman, You're probably correct. It's being a few years since I've had something that small/Old apart. I do remember the easiest way to tell was by counting the Axle studs..

Bayswater Diffs have a chart on the office wall with all the Rockwell diff 'Models' and pound ratings.
I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.

From my 1980 Ford dealer spec kit
Never actually heard of the S34H ... Seems to had only just come out at that stage.... So more likely the SLHD
