If ya get hold of a dry powder fire extinguisher that's been thrown out, and extract the dry powder from it .. you can put some in a squeezy-puff plastic bottle, like an empty washing-up liquid bottle .. and this makes a good emergency extinguisher.
Just open the top, point in the general direction of the fire and give a few squeezes on the bottle, to cover the fire with powder.
No use for any distance, of course, you have to be close to the fire, and it has to be just a small fire.
The trouble with carrying an extinguisher, is that you generally end up putting out someones elses fire .. and no-one offers to re-imburse you the expense of replacing/recharging your extinguisher .. :(

Near brand new Cat 980 loader (950 hours). Small electrical fire caused this. The powder in the extinguisher was packed down and only a small amount of powder was released with the propellant gas. It may have been wiser just to throw the whole extinguisher at the fire. No cans of beer were available because this happened in a Muslim country. We did have a nip or two of black market whiskey later that night to mourn the loaders passing though.
