Melbourne HS has been on a concerted anti-UFU campaign, and consistently linked this state issue to the recent federal campaign. Hence: read with caution.
Fire safety bus used to teach kids parked despite $150,000 upgrade.
Herald Sun July 10, 2016.
A BUS used to teach kids about fire safety has been off the road for almost three years despite a $150,000 upgrade. Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s SmokeBUSter, which has visited more than 200,000 people, was pulled from service in August 2013. MFB said that it upgraded the bus’s interactive technology so it could extend the life of the award-winning educational tool. The $150,000 upgrade was finished in January last year but MFB said that it had not returned to service after a grievance was lodged by the United Firefighters Union. “Under the current enterprise agreement, UFU and MFB must agree to matters pertaining to the employment relationship and it was the UFU view that the SmokeBUSter refurbishment fell into this category,” an MFB spokesman said.
“The MFB and UFU have continued to discuss this matter since January 2015 and it has been in consultation since then.” UFU secretary Peter Marshall said the SmokeBUSter had been decommissioned because of an MFB risk assessment which showed it was a danger to the public. The risk assessment, seen by the Herald Sun, identified a range of issues with the bus, including fold-down steps which could crush people’s fingers, wiring which could cause electrocution, and a wheelchair platform that might not meet standards. Mr Marshall said he was “sick and tired of MFB vilifying its employees through half-truths and selective information”. MFB said that it was “reconsidering the operational viability of the vehicle” and there was no time frame for it to return to service.
The SmokeBUSter, which was launched in 2000, simulated high risk scenarios in homes and showed the damage fires caused.

Seem to recall both Bedford and 10 series Dodge diesels being used on runway duty, but IDSTBC.

770723Sa Melbourne (International) Airport: Qantas B707 VH-EAE 'City of Swan Hill'; a fire truck (Bedford S?). (Roderick Smith).
This is the same truck as in the earlier photo, and I had forgotten the earlier responses when thinking 'Bedford S'. I have pushed the scan of a 35 mm slide beyond its technical limits.

Roderick, It's more likely to be a Thornycroft Large water Tender. these were replaced with Atkinson Ultra Large Water Tenders in the early 70's.
The one in the picture below is ex DCA Perth Airport.
These preceded the Thornycroft Large Water Tenders ..... Shelvoak Drewery. Slow as a wet week but an awesome pump fitted.
