Hopefully it is a cask of brandy similar to the ones Swiss Mountain Rescue dogs are said to carry>:woohoo:

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

The French site also commented. So the driver is leaning on the truck. :) But still, it's for the water!

Single pusher axle is unusual or has the co-driver got the flat tyre at the repair place next door while the driver loads?

That style of lazy axle appears to be quite common in the US back in that era
As in a trailing lazy axle with only a single wheel fitted
