The Mklll AEC model started in 1949 and ran through to about 1961. From about 1958 the radiator was hidden by a grille. They were imported as a chassis with just the firewall (cowling), cab floor, engine cover and mudguards. The main importer was Hasting Deering in Sydney who built their own cabs. RW Brown was another importer and had cabs built by a firm across the road in Newcastle.
The first AEC has a standard Hasting Deering cab, but interestingly wears a 'Mandator' badge instead of the pre war 'Matador' name which was maintained on exports. The Matador name was given to the war time 4x4 and hence created confusion so the Mandator name was created for 4x2 heavies (both bonnet and cab over) on the home market.
The 2nd AEC has a very 'individual' cab, and being longer may have had a sleeper shelf.
With full air brakes in the early 50's and a heavy chassis that could take any punishment there was no doubt you were king of the road, and typically on interstate. However at 30mph for the 5 speed and 40mph for the later 6 speed the future was going to be limited.
