International Harvester XF4 Army Prototype
Even though it has Shute Upton on it, it is basically a Thomas winch.
Shute Upton where also owned by Ian Thomas.
Shute Upton are actually up the street from us.
I wouldn't recommend sourcing the parts from them though, now days they are a more of a specialist engineering workshop and will charge accordingly.
A.P.E. still make if not the same, similar winches today, and carry the spares for the Thomas winches.
That winch will be a Thomas with Shute Upton cast into the cover plate and dog clutch housing.
I can probably round up the parts for you, (We are A.P.E. distributors) or if you prefer I'll give you a contact at A.P.E.
The parts should be reasonably cheap too, just for a surprise.

Tommy, the winch parts will be pretty easy to get.

Thanks for this info bigcam. I did not know about the Shute/Thomas connection. Very much appreciated

I now have to look at the Workshop manual and find out what I need to get.
Would A.P.E have any of the chaincase parts? I think these chaincases were exclusive to the army winches.
Can you answer this question please.....would the 8000lb internals fit the 6000lb winch. I ask this as I do know where there is an 8000lb winch for sale. Importantly, it come with the rollers and frame.

Hello defective
Thanks for the comments.
It is always nice to know there are other mad keen collectors/enthusiasts out there that appreciate the importance of the 'chase'

I will continue to post updates. I think the next major job will be the removal of the 351 V8. May do that next weekend.

...yes Tommy .. the "chase" is a wonderful adventure...i was looking for a door for my 1955 QX Commer, but found (and purchased) a complete and original 1948 model truck of the same version....still with all of its 1947 glass!

.....unbelievable!!
I have a few friends who prefer the 'chase' rather than the restoring. Horses for courses I suppose.
I did Google the 1948 QX Commer. What a truck. Never seen them before. Great to see you have found one in original condition.

I am now looking for a SV-304 V8 motor for the truck. Prefer running and must be complete.
I am located in Perth, WA. Will travel (within reason) to pick up
