Brocky 45,
Suppose it could be compared in some ways to your TVA scheme, probably on a slightly different scale.
If you go back a bit through these same posts, you will find quite a few references to books written about it, although does take a bit of research.
Cooma was the actual HQ for the Snowy Mountains Authority (SMA) on the ground, but the whole scheme was spread over an area roughly 3 or 4 times larger than the A.C.T. just guesstimating.
Something that here in Oz we are quite proud of, yet surprisingly not a great deal is known about in general terms. Ask your average schoolkid and I would say most would immediately think of the Smiggins Holes or Thredbo ski resorts.
I would urge you to have a bit of a read, if your any good at researching old photo's (I'm not!) you will find out plenty, but I have noticed that most of the transport/plant photo's seem to be held by private individuals who post them on their own selected sites. But I could be wrong in saying that, just that having been interested in the topic since I was a kid myself, have never actually visited or even seen, a wholly dedicated gallery as such. Like to find one myself.
Know it's not much help, but as often the case on this forum, someone or other will always come to the fore and offer sound advice.
Cheers, Dave_64

Brocky, What the Snowy scheme does is capture most of the water that was running east to the coast and by way of dams and huge tunnels divert it to the inland where it can be used for irrigation. Hydro power is the secondary benefit. You don't see much on a map because so much is underground through hard rock. The whole town of Adaminiby had to be moved to higher ground.
Dave, a good place to search for old photos is Trove. Dial that up and then images and then your subject. Takes you to the likes of National and various state libraries.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your responses. Some very interesting reading there.
I think part of my question was my misinterpretation of the word "Scheme". Aussie Scheme equals Yankee Project, where as the Yankee "scheme" usually denotes some kind of foul play of monies!! I wish now that our trip had included more of southeastern Australia. A person can NOT see much from a damn airplane!! If I ever get a chance to come back I will rent a motorhome or as you call them a caravan.
Our TVA was built mostly for flood control and the result was an inland transportation system to bring river barges from the Mississippi river all the way to Knoxville Tenn. As with the Snowy each dam created Hydro power. I think there are some small copies of the Snowy in our Rocky Mtn state of Colorado to divert water west to our arid southwest.

Hello All,
Regarding the relocation of towns that were required for the Scheme's "network", there were three. Adaminaby, Jindabyne & Talbingo.
If you're ever in Cooma & have the time visit the Visitors Information Centre across the road from the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (formally the SMA) Head Quarters Building located at Cooma North. Cooma Council also have a Visitors Information Centre in the main street, Sharp St at the western end of Centenial Park.
