Last night I watched a show on Channel 7 about the Jeep trip. The one thing that intrigued me was, how he carried enough fuel to keep it going for a 30 day trip across the Pacific from Japan to Alaska. I know from experience that they are frugal but, 30 days fuel supply on board?

Not forgetting the Zapp family in their 1928 Graham Paige
I had the pleasure of meeting them in South Australia, a fantastic family and every bit as happy as they appear in their videos.
Interestingly the car was stretched while in Australia
And they almost didn't even travel 100kms without the wooden spokes letting them down!
If you get the chance to buy one of their books it ultimately assists them with their travels and is a truly amazing read.

Ben Carlin had a huge fuel tank underneath for the Atlantic trip. As they used the fuel he let water replace it in the tank. When the fuel was all used and he wanted to dump the tank he had to jump over the side in the middle of the Atlantic when one of their release catches caught and it hung down on one side threatening to tip the jeep over. He eventually got it free and the tank went to the bottom.
On the Pacific leg from Japan he built a huge steel sausage for the fuel which they towed setting it free after consuming its contents.

Thanks Lang, I figured you would know. I wasn't doubting the trip at all, just intrigued as to how he managed it. Still a mad man though. But then again aren't most adventurers?
I've never been quite game, or mad enough, to try half the things I have dreamed of doing. Too late now.

Prompted by the exploits of Francis Birtles, my father bought a second-hand Bean as his first car. It gave him constant trouble, notable broken stub axles. He switched to new motorbike.

Birtles only used the Bean because the company gave him the car and sponsorship. He did not particularly like it and preferred American machines for many of his adventures.
Here is Warren Brown's promo for his Birtles book. Warren has a Bean Birtles replica, beautifully done, in Sydney.
I think the greatest Australian motoring explorer was Michael Terry. Terry wrote a lot of great books on his adventures.
This is a very good photo article by Ron Moon.
