The 1676 motor was double OHC,and the cams of each head had a train of gears up the block, one at the front ,one at the back....17 gears in all.The heads had screw in precombustion chambers. As mentioned ,only fitted to one machine ,the 621J scraper. They were very prone to crankshaft failure, and cracked heads....I reckon Atkinson got them cheap, which is why they used them....

Some time ago, asked the question about Atkinsons with Kirkstall "Omega" diffs.
I also recall Swishy posting a photo and a bit about Mecho Plant Hire's float.
I could have this wrong, but they were rated at something like 90,000lbs.
Wonder if this 8 wheeler has the same back end ??
Seems like an eon ago, and I am probably wrong again, but I have either seem, or read somewhere, of a set-up that had a combination of double reduction worm drive diffs as well as the planetary hub reduction.

This truck has Omega diffs. The centres are double reduction, like a Mack. The hubs look very like Leyland H /WT ones.

John, the diffs don't have a double reduction in the centre, just a normal hypoid centre but upside down due to axle rotation and the hub gearing arrangement.
I have a manual for the diffs so I will add some sectioned details here soon for your viewing.

Nice truck Foden Delta, I'm guessing it would sound pretty good.
40 years with the same engine in it is not bad, is it low K's?
Only reason I ask is a lot of heavy haulage trucks are geared down and specced up that they are not much good for anything else.
That Bullbar would be pretty easy replicated.
Dave 64, 3406 and 3408 are from memory late 70's, the 3406A was 70's, pre combustion and use more fuel than a GM.

The Cats could use brown diesel, which was cheaper, especially if you had a dozer or a farm, and could crib on the road tax.Caterpillar always made a big deal of using cheap fuel. The 3406/8/12 were very good motors,,later changed over to direct injection...Seen claimed good runners on ebay for $500.....big tho, weigh 1 1/4 ton for the 6.
