Stuck wheel bearing was created by AaronS
Hi all

Redoing front brakes on Bessie (C1600) and the inner bearing is stuck on the axle stub. Now, before I went and got the grinder and chisel, I thought it would be worthwhile seeking advice from people with far more wisdom and experience in these matters than I do.

Does anyone have any tips?

Regards
Aaron

Run a bead of weld around it, half way round or a bit more works most times. The heat expands the race, then light hammer an chisel while still hot.

Chipping away, one day at a time.

I have had success on other vehicles using a normal three prong bearing puller but you need three hands or a mate to help because there is not much to grip on.
I will be spending tomorrow with the owner of a D1610 and a 190, and an owner of D1510, AB1810 and assorted C lines and D lines, so will ask them.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Don't run a bead of weld all the way around , because that will shrink the bearing cone and you will
have to grind it off. …………

Bearing splitter to grab the bearing and some threaded rod.

Thanks all

Tried the weld but my skills are rudimentary at best. Don’t have a puller or a mate either so it ended up being the dremel and chisel. Gotta love those dremel tools.

I forgot about the bearing splitter. (they don't split the bearing but open up to fit behind the bearing, collar, or what ever else you need to remove) I bought mine new from a tool dealer at a swap meet for $15.00. About $40 in shops. I have only used it twice but when you need it, it is worth its weight in gold! I pulled against it with my three-legged bearing puller. I have had that for ages and bought it for very few dollars at a Trash and Treasure market. Like a stud remover and a few other fairly cheap tools, these are a must to make otherwise nearly impossible tasks easy and quick.

I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I know you have solved your problem but I ran it past Inter owning mate and his first comment was "Front wheel bearings are in the hub." Woops, I, and I think other readers, automatically thought of bearing on axle housing. Silly us!
He then said "take the hub to someone who has a press and push it out. problem solved"

In the first post it states the inner bearing is stuck on the axle not in the hub.

The inner bearing cone stuck to the axle spindle was common on the IH army trucks had done no miles.......seems IH made the bearings a very tight fit on new trucks,so they didnt come loose for a lot of miles.......When youre used to worn out trucks with 1/16" clearance between the cone and the axle, its not expected.
