I just had another thought Lang, you might need another crane to fit yours out of and back into the socket. Ha Ha.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Good one! I now have a good reason for purchasing the crane for the Mack.

The crane only weighs 25-30kg without the base. There is just a tapered bearing on the bottom to support the swivel load, the rollers come out attached to the main shaft and only gravity holding the whole thing in the base.

When you buy your winch Lang, Spend a few Extra Bucks & get a 12Volt one.. It'll be money well spent. In my Opinion..

Already cut slots in the top brace to run the wire and yes thinking about putting the winch at ground height operation point.

Hayseed I have been tossing up on that. I like the idea of electric but for the amount of use it will get maybe a bit too much stuffing around. I have a hand winch on my shelf. Will look at Gumtree for a cheap small electric winch though.

I know it is not a 1948 Kenworth restoration and boring as batshit but may as well complete the ute crane story.

Heavy wall tube directly under crane as a steady leg. It is high tensile and I can not remember where I got it from or what it came off. Unfortunately one thing leads to another and looking at the 2mm checker plate tray I don't think it is good enough just to bolt up the crane so I now have to make up a backing plate.

As an aside I got the exhaust blokes to fold up as heavy a tube as they could handle for the rear ladder rack and it fits a treat in pockets I welded on front of the headboard same shape as the front one. You can see the pockets at the rear of the tray where it just drops in if needed.

When I mounted my crane on the drawbar of the trailer I bought some more of the same size rectangular metal as the drawbar and made an extra frame inside the "A" frame so it was solid to bolt the base to. Cost a heap for the HT 20mm bolts that hold it in place. Can take a pic of it if you like.

I was lucky enough that Dad found a good cheap hand winch with 1:1, 5:1 and 10:1 ratios... All others were only 1 and 5... My crane will lift a hell of a lot more than my arm will permit so it's a great set up all around for me an my wood hooking
