Lang, As V8Ian said.. There's a range change between the 2 Nuetrals..

Hmmm....... I thought that was what I said in the first answer? May be typical me made it too covuluted, too hard for others to follow. Had a cupla ex-wives who at different times swore that I could stretch out a simple yes/no answer into a three page mini manuscript!

Hi Lang congrats on your new toy , I thought you might be standing back admiring your truck, takes me about 3 months and even then I'll sneak out wondering if I'd missed something or wondering if it had a option jim

I only got to drive it around a 5 acre paddock but from my pushing, pressing and rocking the stick I think Dave64 and V8Ian might have the answer and Hayseeds beaut diagram confirms what I was feeling. It did not seem to have any vertical movement in the stick. It is a bit sloppy because they have put a rod with several joints across between the seats to convert from left to right hand drive at the factory.

The seller is a really nice bloke whose family company operates floats out of Dalby carting mine and farm machinery. He is going to do some work on it "because he feels he should" such as welding on the new tie-down rail, changing 4 wheels to put on better tyres and cutting off the high "hay" exhaust so I can get it in my shed.

Cobba I did discover that position "C" is extra low with a lever on the stick that you pull up to go across into reverse or super-low. I think this is just a mechanical stick lock-out to stop you grabbing low in normal operation and nothing to do with high/low range shifting.

You will notice I already have that giant road-train alloy bull bar up for sale.

Thanks fellers for your input.

Just found this on the Eton site.

Range Shift Low to High (4th to 5th)
1. When in the last LOW range gear position (4th) and ready for the
next upshift, with the engine / vehicle speed at a point that will allow
the vehicle to accelerate.
2. Release the accelerator.
3. Fully depress the clutch pedal. Move the shift lever to neutral.
4. Move the shift lever fully RIGHT for a short period - doing this will
trigger the range valve to automatically shift the transmission to
HIGH range.
5. Allow the shift lever to return to its natural cross gate position.
6. With the clutch still depressed shift to 5th speed.
7. Release the clutch and apply the accelerator.
8. Continue upshifting to 8th speed.
Downshift
1. Fully depress the clutch pedal, move the shift lever to the next
desired speed.
2. Release the clutch pedal.
3. Continue downshifting to 5th speed.
Range Shift High to Low (5th to 4th)
1. When in the last HIGH range gear position (5th) release the
accelerator.
2. Fully depress the clutch pedal. Move the shift lever to neutral.
3. Move the shift lever fully LEFT for a short period - doing this will
trigger the range valve to automatically shift the transmission to
LOW range.
4. Allow the shift lever to return to its natural cross gate position.
5. With the clutch still depressed shift to 4th speed.
6. Release the clutch.
7. Slow the vehicle and continue downshifting.
Note: Never shift to crawler gear (C) while the vehicle is moving

Just thinking that although it would become second nature very quickly this shift method would be good for beginner truck drivers. With a normal range button or twist knob you just keep stirring in the natural manner. This one forces you to know the various "unnatural" paths of the stick so you get the dance steps right.

we had a dozen or so mixed tractor units and rigid 4s at a company i drove for ,and they had the same 4 by 4 shift pattern plus low crawler dead easy to get used to and as you say good starter gearbox for novice drivers to get used to.the F6 which came out after this along with the F10 and 12 had the high /low switch but same number of gears and spliter on F10/12 ,
when shifting in low straight forward from the neutral position is first gear and when knocked through into hi puts gear lever inline straight forward into hi first or 5th
Mercedes had this box in them as well , along with the horrible EPS , one driver thought and used to tell others that EPS stood for Extra Passenger Seat ,(electronic powershift),

Yes John

With more than double the horsepower of the old Perkins Commer and basically the same size truck, I am expecting an extra couple of knots into a headwind.
