Some fantastic photos there
It still amazes me that these trucks, as slow as they were could compete with the railways as much as they did

Great pics. The 'tin front' mklll AEC would have overdrive but still a plodder and good for about 40mph on the flat. Full air brakes which in those times was something special. The Commer has the later single screen cab and probably faster

The ability for trucks to go "Door to Door" without transhipping was where they made up the time for being slower and where theywon out and still do.

These two AEC’s were taken at Swansea near Newcastle NSW early 1960’s. I suspect the tipper had a homemade roof and doors etc.

Re the AEC's; Early mklll's came with the firewall, engine cover and bracket to support the electric box only. Importer Hastings Deering did provide a cab of their own but many had cabs made locally.
In spite of the grime the Mammoth Major 8 is still loved as evidenced by still having the nut ring covers on both front axles.
The model name 'Matador' was changed to 'Mandator' in England to avoid confusion with the 4wd army truck. Export markets got the name change a few years down the track.
Air horns both sides - what a hoot back then!
