At least the AEC in TNT livery had a BULLBAR to protect the headlights from grey grasshoppers . looks like leaf springs cut in half .spose if something hit it it would be propelled back onto the road.LOL

That was a very common “bullbar “ setup around that era, many blitz wagons and other ex army trucks had them.

This is the same petrol engined Commer on the piggyback across the Nullarbor, before it was painted in Alltrans livery. And the AEC and Leyland photos were taken at the same yard at Swansea where the 8 wheeler and trailer AECs were. They were coal trucks hence the dirty wheels etc.

Off topic (of course!) but hey..
The kellogs trailer on the Commer, very similar to my Dads, if not the same one?
This pic was in mid 70's, so perhaps 10 years after the commer pic-

It's upside down! but i don't know why.
This pic was mid 80's- dad still had the Kellogs, it had been off the road for a number of year, and it got re birthed again. Then sold after not being used much. ...
It always looked like it was going to burst in the middle with 7 cars on it..
Cheers!

hayseed about TNT name; following the huge expansion of the company during the 50's K.W. Thomas changed its name to Thomas National Transport in 1958. The name was registered in each of the States but the Australian federal government lodged an objection claiming that the word national could gave an impression that the company was government-owned. After many meetings a compromise was reached on the name Thomas Nationwide Transport. Unfortunately, by this time, many of the company properties and a grat deal of Equipment had already been repainted Thomas National Transport. Because of the cost, the company took a very long time to make the corrections.

And why would I not be reading this thread cobbadog?

I am more than happy with Austin, and Bedford, plus C being for Commer - they're all British after all, just like me (even though I have spent 80%+ of my life in Australia)

PS I am still working on it, just not so vocal of late . . .

Just thought it would inspire the bug in us all and start looking for a "C for Commer".
