Hayseed, I have no idea, if it was a TOA trailer I would think it might be an futile attempt to stabilise it while tipping, but as it’s a chassis tipper, I’m sorry, I have no idea.

    WAG
    mid 70's axle loading
    Steers 5t
    Drives 13t Nuther edit (me can't coun) total Gross = 34.5 - tare 14t = payload 20.5t FFS
    Spread RSend 16.5
    = Total Gross 24.5t
    - Tare 14t
    Payload = 14.5t ???
to gain maxium loading U needed a long spread BTween Truck and Trailer
WAG the sectioned compartment was to place the load of wet sand to get maximum legal loading
RSend of tailer was on airbags with landing legs as the rear axle would bottom out with full load when tipping
they may have set the legs at a set height to tip load

Swishman is all over this, apparently the rear axle was a self steering axle that wobbled as well

It would of been a very expensive and experimental piece of gear back then and even today

It was a unusual tipper but not the only attempt to get around bridge laws and carry a full load

Can't see it being much of a self steer with the limited distance between the wheel and the leg and the wheel and the mud lap. Just my thoughts and what would I know.

I would agree wee allis, however a fella on Facelessbook has stated numerous times that they had a steerable axle, I cant see that been the case but as everyone knows I dont know two tenths of stuff all

If I zoom in on the pictures I can't see any way it could be a steerable axle

There just isnt emough room and I doubt the wheels would fit under the chassis rails either so it would be extremely limited

I cant see anything in the picture to suggest it would be steerable at all

And if it was the mud flaps and the rear of the chassis and the lights etc would rub as there isnt much room there at all

Just saying, I seem to recall on the photo showing it tipping it is stated the legs are there to make it stable when tipping

Now that makes perfect sense to me

Nah, the legs are there so you can wind them down, lift the trailer to change a tyre without having to get under and jack it up. Just kidding,

I can’t see that it would matter if it had airbags or not. It’s a chassis tipper all wheels stay on the ground when tipping. If it was a TOA it would make more sense, but its not.

The couple of Steerable Trailer axles I've had anything to do with had very Limited Travel. (At a Guess 10-15 Degrees) as the Inside Tyre Hits the Bottom Flange of the Trailer Beam..

I can’t see that it would matter if it had airbags or not. It’s a chassis tipper all wheels stay on the ground when tipping. If it was a TOA it would make more sense, but its not.

I agree, Those Legs would be a Complete & Utter waste of Time..
I've operated T.O.A. Air bag equipped Tippers with 3 Compartments for Stockfeed without any Dramas..
