Bruce Garland just sent me these photos of his 1938 Chevrolet. Bruce says the original owner's family said it had done the Melbourne to Perth run a few times - no small feat in 1938!
It has about a foot put into the centre of the cab (believed a new original special order from the dealer). A lot more than 5 minute's work to build this. You can see the standard cab on the truck behind.
The rear of the seat swings up to give two full length double bunks. Might be one of Australia's first single unit sleeper cabs as compared with various box arrangements.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Those extra-wide cabs were known as Market Gardener's cabs because the gardener could drive to the market overnight and sleep across the seat until the market opened. I have not heard of the double bunk idea. It sounds like the brainchild of a smart operator!
