Good bit of history. Maybe Gladys got her votes from the Navy not the Marines?
Everything gets sensationalised. They were safely set up on the outskirts of a city twice the size of San Francisco in "hard" conditions. Just shows how people are promoted beyond their level of competence.
No door on the ladies' showers! 20 minute fix instead of whining to higher headquarters. Everything on the list was fixable within the resources of the unit but the officers shot through to live in the pub while the boys were left to their own resources.
Despatch riders with messages "strapped" to their bodies with orders to shoot. Give us a break! My dad's second partner was one of the girls at the Naval Intelligence Section in Victoria Barracks processing the information received from Moorabbin and elsewhere. She said they all just had a tiny bit of the puzzle to work on and never got to know the overall outcome of anything they saw.

There is more to Gladys: there are Marriott family here in my district and one of them is into family history in a big way. I showed her the Gladys pic and yes " she is my distant cousin, they had a market garden in Moorabbin ".
The DeSoto army ute, I had one back years ago, in nice original condition, also had the Plymouth version which was still registered , I drove the Plymouth home. At the time, I didn't have the restoring skills, tools and space to store them under cover, so I passed them onto a guy in the Chrysler club. Where are the utes now ! Another club member also had two of them. A restored example is in QLD .
I wrote a story for the Plymouth car club USA magazine about these utes. The editor had never heard about a 1941 Plymouth car based pickup.

“I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them”
― Adlai E. Stevenson II
I could almost swear that M&MTB Bedford is wearing "garden state" plates from the late 70's. I must be seeing that wrong. When I left Victoria in 1978 it was all J and TK Bedfords among the Dodges and Inters. To be fair, these are the memories of an eight year old...
