I  found this interesting write up on what the US Army were doing,  running convoys from Mt. Isa .

It's written from the American perspective,  there were lots of Australian units involved too.

The guy in the film with the beard: he could pass for a 1970s hippy . 

I remember my father saying:  when he was posted South from Darwin, the drivers of the 6x6 trucks were black guys. He said, the Yanks were very hospitable, they freely shared any rations at the truck stops.

Some more pics from the same Web site. 

The Reverse Lend Lease vehicles supplied to the USAFIA had their own unique reg. numbers. Typically, the US Armed Forces in Australia reg. numbers ran with a U or AP prefix . The buses are : Studebaker and two Dodge. The Zero is on display in a Brisbane st.

Pics from the AWM. Car is a rare 1941 Ford sedan assembled by Ford Australia.
