1951 Land Rover, in 1951, the original pivoting  front spring shackles were moved to the rear end of the front springs, doing this this provided more steering stability.  The earlier models have the pivoting shackles at the front end of the spring , like a WW2 jeep. The front springs were also widened in 1951.

Series 1 Land Rovers never had a decent steering box, the box was mounted onto the flimsy steel bulkhead where it flexed. The early boxes had a stupid alu alloy case that cracked. The series 2 has a much improved recirculating ball design box that was mounted to the chassis . Some series 1 owners go to the trouble of retrofitting a series 2 box .

1951 was the last year to have the sidelights on the bulkhead

Thhe steering boxes were various types of Burman s ......Burmans made a full range of boxes from the plain awful for crap cars like the Hillman Minx and Series E 8 to the recirculating ball type ...........the best of all pommy boxes was the Ransome and Marles ,fitted to high cost trucks ...........incidentally ,a Burman Type F full nut was the last manual box fitted to Australian Internationals.

Great pics thanks F Rust.

Nowadays we have ethyl glycol, anti freeze, anti boil and anti corrosion in multiple brands and colours. What did the Old Timers do to stop the radiator water freezing in the cold climates and cracking blocks?

I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.

SB think they drained cooling system when parked overnight in subzero temperatures.
Mostly only water in them.

Cars around Vanguard, Triumph Mayflower, Dodge or Plymouth, Hillman van, Hudson Terraplane, couple of Austin’s, Ford Pilot and Buick Ute about 1927. Ford Mercury beside Landrover.

Thanks for the photos.
