The next 2 trucks came with the purchase of MHP Carrying Company in the mid 70's.

Commer powered by a 6.354 Perkins and a joey box in an attempt to make up for a lack of horsepower. MHP had other 6x4 Commers repowered with a V6 53 GM. This one still had the Perkins fitted when it came to the Bellambi yard. Driven when new by Mick Gallagher.

I think that is Bobby Weaver standing in front of a 8v 71 GM powered White. The truck was traded in at Kenworth at Lansvale with a very worn out motor.

Here is 2 of MHP's trucks that were sold prior to Heggie's buying them out.
NR Mack with a Bedford cab. Still had the Mack motor.

MHP had a few of these Commers in various forms. One was set up as a removals van and another as a table top.

Surprising how good the Bedford cab looks on the NR Mack. Looks like it was meant for it. Doesn't even look like a lowly Bedford. (Apologies to Bedford owners, but mum always said tell the truth).

Spotted this at the Clarendon Truck Show.
Heggie's purchased 6 SARs in the one order to pull tri axle tipping trailers on the coal.
8v71T GM Engine, 12515 Roadranger gearbox, Eaton diffs on torsion bars.
This truck now has Hendrickson walking beam suspension.

Photos by Warren Noakes.

Heggie's W Model Kenworth probably powered by 8v 92 T GM. Never liked the use of super singles on tipping trailers, Always thought that a blow out will leave the trailer falling over on its side.

Lennon Towers (Edmund T Lennon) Leyland Hippo. Sold out to Heggie's in the early 70's. This truck #3and another one was sent to the Bellambi yard and had the chassis shortened about 3 feet, painted in Heggie's colors and started pulling a flat top trailer. #3 was later used as a 6 wheeler tipper at Yellow Rock pit moving coal from the bins to a stockpile.

The ergomatic cab was a bastard to drive. The seat and floor underneath stayed put when the cab tilted, and there was 6 inch gap allround with fumes oil wind dust and what have you blowing up under the drivers seat. The the locking mechanism was a failure, and the cab would sometimes crash down on the car in front as you stopped.Or keep tilting until the windscreen hit the ground.Cavanagh Bros in Brisbane put Leader cabs on a couple of Hippos. At the time Leyland was in turmoil with commie unions battling for power and mad socialist governments trying to keep the whole country under centralist controll. But ,apart from the cab, they were a good truck, certainly much better than the lightweight rubbish Inter were putting out as HD trucks.

I have seen it and done it my self with Lennon Towers Hippos, drivers trying to engage low range in the spitter by standing up and learning forward over the steering and using their body weight to force the short gear lever back into low range.
Another recurring problem was the fuel return lines from the injectors was located under the rocker covers.
Even a small leak over time would result in the engine oil thinning and the oil pressure dropping.
