Hi,
the same people, doing the same thing, the same way tends to result in the same outcome each year with a diminishing return.
Like most clubs there is a general apathy towards getting involved and this leaves the running of the club and this event down to the same handful of people in the HCVCA, some who have been doing it since the days of AFL Park and Sandown. Excluding the members who do put their hand up to help out on the day on the gates and parking, there is few or no new younger members getting involved and bringing in fresh ideas and energy to get the event back up to the numbers they used to get.
Add the points already raised about there being a lot more Truck Shows these days, for many years the HCVCA Display Day was the only event for Trucks happening, to compete with for attendees and suitable dates. While there was a trickle coming though the public gate, read paying, there was also a number coming through the display vehicle entrance to avoid paying. Unless the event can cover its costs to the venue etc. then it may soon resolve itself.
The existence of suitable venues to park large vehicles in quantity is very limited around Melbourne, unless you have a lot of $$$'s splash out, has forced the event well out of the suburbs and that doesn't help attendance of the public or display vehicles.

I have been involved in a few clubs over the years
Two main problems with clubs are my main observation
1) people running the club are not willing to step back and allow fresh blood to take control
This is understandable as the time effort put in is quite amazing and the out going people don't want to see the club down hill
2) getting people to step up become involved in the running of the club
this I find is best addressed in a very direct manner
I just approach people and ask "can you please do this for me"
People always try to get out of it, I just give some guidance and even if they completely balls the job up, I always thank them
I now have a helper, thats the first stage in getting a worker in a club

I've been in many clubs and associations over the past many years and experience has taught me that there are doers and watchers in all groups. You usually find the watchers are also the wingers. BUT, whichever group you choose to run with, don't complain, as you have made the choice for yourself, just as they have done. You have the opportunity to switch ships at the next AGM.
One association I have been involved with for the past19 years, both on the Management Committee and as regular volunteer doing all the repairs/maintenance. Each time we have meeting of members, I call for assistance to help with the workload. The only response I get is, "We'd like to help but we know you would only get your nose out of joint if we did." 100% copout. Well, after next weekend, I quit, permanently.

100% correct on all fronts
It's bloody hard, I dunno
I just didn't ask in the end and more told people they had to help
It rubbed some people the wrong way at first but it did get them involved and stopped a lot of the whinging
But in the end, I quit and never returned after many years
Never got angry bitter or twisted
At the AGM, once I got someone else to take my position I was done with it all
