Moving of display vehicles whilst public close by

Hi Guys. It is of great concern to me that at some shows, display vehicles are allowed to start and move (perhaps for a parade) whilst the public and in particular CHILDREN are close by.
I believe that it is only a matter of time, that if this is allowed to continue, there will be a serious or fatal accident, which I'm certain nobody wants.
The Museum of Fire (Penrith) www.museumoffire.com.au/ seems to do it right with their truck shows.

Rod understand your concerns in regards to this issue. I feel if restrictions start to be imposed that some not people will be put off from going to these events. If someone wants to leave early how do you enforce this.

I have been to few shows where if you want to leave early they have a person walk in front of the truck so this means at walking pace and the person has there safety jacket on . Dave

As you rightly said in the first place the moving of vehicle is a question about a risk assessment at the event.

For example sandown show has wide gaps between vehicles and generally a mature visitors. The vehicle and public entrences are separate. So the risk is small and manageable.

Penrith truck show is totally different situation so the risk is also different. The rows are narrow and due to the more fairground setup and environment. The visitors are generally younger. Also only one entrance and exit. So risk as lot higher.

In Victoria when the vehicles are in public they also have there own public liability insurance thanks to the third party insurance if they have either full reg or permit. If they don't have either really they shouldn't be moving in public anyway!

In the end the risk must be assessed at each event and appropriate action taken. And if not happy with the arrangement and you don't feel safe to move your vehicle. Don't move!

Also some events I wouldn't be worth me going if I had to be in place before x and can't leave before y. Simply due to the travel time and I can't afford to take a couple of days off for an event. Same problem for locals if they have a range of vehicle but few drivers. Must be a case by case risk assessment of the situation by the event organizers.

Deadlee, that sounds like a reasonable method of moving a vehicle. However, as JB stated, it's up to the show organisers to do their own risk assesment before allowing vehicle movement. ;)

Hi Guys,
All this talk of risk assessment plays right into the hands of the bloody insurance companies. I have found that if you start putting arrival times and departure times on events you will only turn people away. At events i have helped organize we simply escort vehicles in and out and we don't have any trouble. At the end of the day it all comes down to common sense. Please don't let our events go the way of the stationary engine movement where they even have to fence of tractors that are not moving. I can understand running stationary engines with their exposed moving parts needing to be fenced off because of little fingers that is just common sense.
Don't let insurance companies dictate to us what we should do because there is more than one company out there so shop around and get one that has a little common sense. Difficult i know but they are there if you look.
Well thats my two bobs worth anyway.
Cheers Kevin.

"Common sense" is a wonderful term, but it seems that visitors to our shows don't have to use it, and we have a legal system now that says if there is an incident due to a visitor's carelessness or stupidity, it is our fault because we didn't predict it.

It is the insurance companies that want the risk assessments, and the insurance companies that put all the restrictions on the event. Shopping around is not all that easy, because a lot of companies don't want to cover this sort of event any more, or charge untenable premiums for doing so.

The problem with this sort of situation is that once you make one exception no matter how genuine, others think they should also be allowed to get out early and that is when the arguments really start.
