You do realise the first computers used racks, gears and cogs in the 1800s? I didn't think you were quite that old! lol. The first electrical computers were being experimented with by the military just prior to WW2 to make the firing tables for motars etc. I am not sure you are that old either. The Museum in Melbourne has what was the world's most powerful computer when made by the CSIRO in 1949. It's about as powerful as those cheap, throw away calculators companies used to use as promotional give aways. The Australian Government cancelled the CSIRO program as "there will be no need for computers" so we stopped being the world leaders in them. Yet we are referred to as "the clever country"!Almost every day now, I have to log in. I always click on "Remember me."
What I cannot understand is that every time, before I find that I have to log in, I am always listed as being on line (but I cannot open anything)
It is beyond my reasoning.
I love telling computer nerds that I was born before computers were invented.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Yes, Bruce,
Charles Babbage built his "Difference Engine" as he called it in the late 1800's. It could well be called a mechanical computer. He is said never to have got it working properly and his supporters claim that he deliberately put errors into his plans for it so that nobody else could build it and claim the credit.
The first electronic computer is said to have been built in 1948. I was born before this.
I do not know anything about electric bomb aimers built in the 1930's but doubt that electronics were available or sophisticated at that time.

Are you saying that Governments or their advisors got it wrong?
What about the idiot who convinced the Government that it should not build dams because it would never rain again?
