More on W C Fields.
He spent his first night in a hole that his gang dug a "bunk" The night was reasonable comfortable but by morning rain was running in.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

When the sun came up, he scaped off topsoil and lay in the sun to dry out..

He modified the bunk to stop water running in and was relaxed for the first time in years.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Fields came up with a way to rob Chinese shopkeepers.
He would have friend stand in streetcar (Tram) tracks in front of oncoming tram. Driver would clang his bell to try to get person to get out of the way.
When tram bell drowned out shopkeepers bell, Fields would dash in and steal all the money from till.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

More about W C Fields:-

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds, ten shilling, result - Happiness.
Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and sixpence, result - misery.

Fields in one of his greatest roles, as Micawber in the Metro-Goldwin-Meyer masterpiece, David Copperfield.

Fields offhand larceny invariably got him into trouble. Philadelphia Police regarded him as a one-child crime wave. He was frequently seized and flung into jail but always, he claimed "I was innocent, they never got me for the right offence"  In jail he gave whatever name came in handiest at the time and so patently enjoyed the City's bounty that he was usually released without delay. Notwithstanding his enjoyment, he complained bitterly about his couch, the menu and the service, and hurt his warder's feelings.
