How to Drive a Vehicle was created by Lang
These are pages out of "The Motor" UK book called How to Drive a Vehicle 1940

The writing is so pompous and difficult to understand it is quite humorous in places. The aim of the book is stated as giving "the thousands of men and women joining the services who will be confronted for the first time with the problems of driving" a complete understanding of the subject.

The first page is using a two speed axle or auxiliary box. I had to read the middle of page 36 three
times to figure out what he was saying.

This is compensated for by the simple diagram on page 43. Anyone who has never driven a semi-trailer would take a quick look at this and instantly be able to reverse a triple trailer road train for 2 kilometres.

Reading further I just had a revelation. The reason those idiots running heavy vehicle driving schools around Australia are producing poor drivers is none of them have the common sense to have a few horses for the drivers to practise with!

It looks like it was written by that days equivalent of our current over educated "boffins" who work in their air-conditioned, high rise inner city office blocks, in their cardigans, whilst sipping caffe lattes and dreaming of going home to their inner suburban home to spend the evening watching television and sipping chardonnay.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

They are still out there. Using long words is no longer enough, they are actually inventing words now daily.

Back when that was written in 1940, 90% of people joining the army finishing up as drivers would have left school at 12 or 14 and the whole thing completely misses the mark.

I will try to find the British Army truck drver training manual for WW2. That has some interesting approaches to training truck drivers who have never even driven a car. They start off with the truck on rollers facing a wall to learn how to change a crash box before learning to steer.
