A mate of mine still drives his 1980 Holden Gemini Diesel as his daily drive. One time it got stolen and the new drivers put more petrol in the tank, this brought it to a stop. e knew exactly what had happened so he drained the system and put diesel back in and away it went again.
I still get a grin out of seeing him cruise the highway at around 85 - 90 klm/hr with a death grip on the steering wheel and eyes straight ahead. Have no idea how klms are on this unit but that little Isuzu still runs sweet and no black smoke out the back end.

Nothing new to see here folks! Early 80’s IBC installed a 4 cyl EH3000 Mazda/Perkins Turbo with a 5 speed close ratio Celica box into a HZ one tonner for me, had to be engineered, starter motor came back into the passenger footwell a bit. Went like a clock for years until cabin rusted out when I sold it in Geelong . Ford also had offered a Ute with I think was the 4.108 Perkins and manual box, same era , could have been the 4.182.. Several HJ utes fitted with Isuzu 2.2 litre and Trimatic boxes, slugs but gave great economy. Lots of F100,s kicking around with either 6 cyl Perkins, even a bloke in Sth Melb importing Chevvy 350 diesels ex. city cabs. Nothing new under the sun, saw magazine article about mid 1930’s Citroen with 4 cyl Gardner went around Oz cupla times. When Alby Mengles making “World Safari”, another bloke and his missus took off in I think it was an old Packard, diesel converted, slope back shape, circa 1940 . Called his doco, “Australian Safari”, towed an old caravan into some really wild country.

Ive put diesels in all sorts of Oz built utes & trucks......the little Jap /Thailand 4x4 s make it all a waste of time......Possibly the first ,in Qld anyway with semi production was Handasydes, the Holden distributor ,who sold FB utes with a Perk...not a 4/108,they were later, more likely a 4/99 or 4/107....Even in sideplate days ,50hp was pretty slow.

I think gas was the cabbies favourite in the 80's in Sydney.

I caught a lot of cabs and never remember a rattler.

The smell of the gas after a few beverages was pretty telling and no fun.

Me and another bloke put a 2.2L mazda diesel and a 5 speed box into his CF bedford van back in the early 80s. No powerhouse but better that the factory 173 red motor. Changing the 5 speed to a stick floor shift was the biggest problem. Used an F100 stick straight in the top of the box, resulting in a reverse H patten. Little tricky after a few cans, but worked well.

Chipping away, one day at a time.

In brisbane taxi s were mostly LPG because the two taxi companies supplied it free to their owners.......Later on there were a couple of the Mazda 626? diesel taxis.....but you still couldnt beat free fuel....Havent been in a taxi since since the morons at work sent me up to the hospital in a taxi, and I had to cough up around $50 when I got to the hospital......nearly put me in IC.
