I'm totally offgrid, and would never be able to recharge an electric vehicle at my place given the size of my battery banks and array.
Think I'm going to stick with biodiesel power for a while yet before GovCo legislated me off the road, to force me into a Chinese air fryer.
Have a plan for the mghty Falcon panel van to become Perkins biodiesel powered in the interim.

If you are off the grid chances, are you would be heading towards replacing you panels as they degrade, if you do, the new panels are a large step up in power for money, any panels degrading in your system would be dragging your output down to the lowest producing panel there is system, now where it is possible for every panel to have its own micro inverter, in theory you can put a plug on the lead from the panel into an outlet and plug your beer fridge into the power point next to it and have cold beer, and being of the grid you can do that if the sun is shining
People our age will move over to reenables only for economic reasons, it will save a shit load of money reasons.
People in there 40's and under will change over because they have no choice

South Australia has had lots of days running on pure renewables, has had for several years, often exporting to the eastern states on the National grid. Our place is totally offgrid as it would has cost over $250,000 just to get single phase to the boundary fence and another $50,000 to the house, and I need three phase.

grow oil palms ......they are supposed to produce 4 ton of palm nuts a year per acre.,and all you need to get oil is a press ........... a gas producer burning wood is another cheap option.

You cand do off gird 3phase, just a bit fancier inverter, the system I am putting in at the moment will make 40 amp at 240volt with provision for a second 40 in stage 2, limited to 80 amp because of the transformer on the pole, panels in the paddock because they last up to 20 percent longer and make up to 20 percent more power if they can cool at the back.

I’ll be running 3phase offgrid, three inverters through a Siemens control box, 8000 watts per phase(34 amps each at 230 volt)

Fortunately bought my panels Made in Australia by Solarex, (before BP bought them out) with the second array made in the US by Cannon, both are amorphous shade tolerant types and guaranteed for 25 years both put out more amps than their 25 deg heat rating which feed the 2 deep cycle Century battery banks.
Before this we lived aboard boats and motorhomes for 25 years travelling using the same mixed with an air403 wind generator.
We keep the system simple at 24V's only in the cabin but 12V in the MH and boat.
Certainly some interesting stuff coming out in the future.
JohnK, yes that is the HA Mazda which is identical to the Perkins. They were used in several taxi fleets around Sydney and Melbourne.
Due to people advertising them wrongly I found the easiest way to tell the HA from the SL quickly is the water inlet/outlet are reverse sides, and the HA is indirect injected (4 glow plugs in the head) while the larger 3.5 SL has only the inlet grid heater.
I use a supply of clean used cotton seed oil from 3 local cafe's mixed with diesel.

on our cane farm in north Queensland we had large areas of swampy unproductive ground
I planted coconuts for this very reason, they grew okay, they never got to the productive stage but palm oil to run my farm on was my plan
I reckon building a machine like they use for picking up golf balls would be the go, only bigger of course, to collect 100's of coconuts every couple of days
I can't remember exactly the numbers now, but a few hundred trees would of been enough to run all the farms needs, on and off the highway

I see both Mercedes and Toyota have said that while they continue to produce electric vehicles they are both directing their research into Hydrogen as a priority over electric. Toyota have said that for a couple of years now and Mercedes just released the announcement this week.
