Insane $17 million Thor24 truck has a crazy amount of superchargers
news.com.au November 27, 2019
This one of a kind big rig that took seven years to build was recently sold in Saudi Arabia for a cool $17 million, and there are some crazy features that need to be seen to be believed.
Thor24 big rig.
A big power big rig that took seven years to create has sold at auction in Saudi Arabia for US$12 million ($17.7 million).
But it’s not the price tag that is the most incredible thing with the aptly named Thor24, a one-off custom build that featured on the TV show Jay Leno’s Garage.
What started as a 1984 Peterbilt has been transformed into a high-performance supertruck more reminiscent of a top fueller drag racer rather than something used to haul freight.
It even has four parachutes for those who try to test its claimed 130mph (209km/h) top speed.
Its underpinnings and engine bay were stretched to accommodate twin 14-litre V12 Detroit Diesel engines.
For good measure 12 superchargers were bolted on to take the claimed power output to 3974 horsepower (almost 3000kW), which is about four times more than a Formula 1 car.
There’s also a Hawker jet engine used as an auxiliary power unit to keep all the electronics running – and there are plenty of those.
The Thor24 has a 24-cylinder engine with 12 superchargers.
As well as a top shelf audio system and LED interior lighting there are seven video screens to ensure everyone on board is well catered for in the entertainment department.
Visuals and additional entertainment are taken care of with “additional features and accessories [that] can go on for ninety nine and one-half days”.
Sold by Worldwide Auctioneers, the sales pitch also boasted of the attention to detail with paint and polished chrome for a vehicle claimed to have a “classic hot-rod vibe”.
Even the underside is a gleaming assortment of polished aluminium and stainless steel.
It also features “plenty of carved skulls” and a “mural featuring Thor in all his raging power”, hence the Thor24 name (24 referencing the number of cylinders).
Thor24 is the brainchild of property developer and entrepreneur Mike Hurrah, who lists his passion as a long list of big boys’ toys that include motorbikes, boats and cars.
While the radical truck is clearly more about show – and noise – than work duties, it is claimed to be “fully equipped to haul a load, with standard hookup and rigging features in place”.
