His 12.46 Australian time post on 13th still had USA time zones on the 12th. California is 18 hours behind our east coast or 6 hours ahead yesterday.

The first European sighting of the west coast was by Sebastian del Cano in the "Victoria" in 1519 (Less than 30 years after Columbus discovered there was land on the far side of the Atlantic)

The first recorded actual landing was by Willem Janszoon in the "Dufhen" variously spelled "Duyfken" (little Dove) at Cape Keerweer on Cape York Peninsular in 1606.

The entire coastline from Cape York westward all the way around to Tasmania was either accurately or approximately mapped by the time James Cook filled in the "short" blank bit. Cook carried the map of Australia with him just filling in the east coast blank which everyone knew was there somewhere to join the dots.
