Thank you V8Ian and John.K. for the extra info which is very handy. After going back to the specialist again tomorrow and a quick measure n quote I plan on doing some practise with the flux core wire that I have. Not sure of the brand but have the box it came ion so will try to confirm country of origin. Dragging the weld for flux core is what I was doing but had the torch more upright then laying over. It is these hints and tips that I am keep to learn.
So will see how I go and make notes on the journey.

Cobba, as mentioned earlier, you need a good earth. Also, the weld site needs to be clean, flux core won't burn through crud like an arc can.

Morning fella's, glad I asked the question, seems like I'm not the only one out there that is interested in improving their experience with welding. Hope you all gain something from other forum members knowledge, I know that I have.
Cheers Tim:)

Check the polarity of your machine is set up right for the wire you're using.

I keep running out of time o get back to my MIG and start playing. I will have to very soon as I have made the cuts to remove the rust section, just need to cut through the old floor where it goes under the coaming rail then check out underneath for any tack welds.
Not going to say when I can make time to set up and practise as every time I do something goes arse up.
