Found this book in the op shop. It's the story of two cars travelling the outback in 1929. A Vauxhall and a baby Austin. The Vauxy driver kept a day to day diary, he was quite the bush mechanic . The Vauxhall coped with the conditions far better than the Austin, the baby was abandoned at Daly Waters, driven by a 18 year old Englishman.

Many pics in the book.

I read this story years ago and it is a beaut adventure.

It is still a story of tourists having their own adventure. One, a capable mechanic/motorist in a well equipped suitable vehicle and the other much more creditable story of a babe-in-the-woods kid just having a go. Nothing like articles in magazines today about adventurers in a $100,000 Landcruiser crossing the dreaded Simpson where the biggest danger is being run over by the traffic if you stop for a leak.

They were in a time when it was truly remote and few city Australians would contemplate such a journey. They did follow the telegraph line for much of the way but heaps of tracks from the Model T Fords on every station and various other outback motoring workers and travellers were there to follow.

It is well worth a read in an age when an hours walk in the Daintree with a guide is billed as the adventure of a lifetime or, God give me strength, an "adventure" cruise with 2,000 of your closest friends to the wilds of Vanuatu.

Every 18 year old should read this book to see what real 18 year olds did back in the day.

I Googled the book and see quite a few for sale by second hand booksellers from $10-30. I just found my copy not read for years - I will have another look at it.
