What I'm tending to lean my thinking towards is that he must have a box of pencils sitting in the drawer on his desk - when the pencil is blunt, he could simply grab another one from the box!

I reckon he's only written each number once and taken a picture of each instance then used an algorithim to select each frame in sequence.
Now that sounds like a know it all doesnt it :D

Well, it's because you are right, Baz. A regenerating pencil (that regenerates every 60 seconds :P) would be cool though.
