Going back to around 1958, there was Cannonball, I used to watch it all the time.

And don't forget 'The Truckies' which was on the ABC, starring John Wood. And the orange and yellow Volvo of course....

I saw an appallingly bad B-grade Hollywood film when being force fed in the lounge of the Tazara train from Zambia to Dar es Salaam. It was colour, and probably 1970s or 80s. A truckie with a kill wish kept waving cars past the truck, luring them to head-on collisions. I can't recall the name. My return trip was marred by having the lounge showing the same film.
I won't spoil the film by revealing the secret: I would rather spoil it by burning the master images.
I can't recall the title, but others here may have seen it (or may even have been the stunt driver).
Later edit: I haven't found the film yet, but here is the best version of 'Born to be wild' from the motorbike cult film 'Easy rider'.
I don't think that this is it:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_Stop_(film)
This one might be, but it lacks a lot of the detail:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel_(1971_film)
This isn't it, but could well be interesting:
...there is a new documentary out that profiles the lives of seven lady truckers, and it's called Alligator On the Zipper. If you love trucking, beautiful roadtrips, and big powerful machines, this is the movie for you. Though anyone who loves trucking will love this movie, Lady truckers especially will have a lot in common with these characters. It is finally a movie that gives an honest look into the lives of the women that make America run. At www.alligatoronthezipper.com , you can watch the trailer, learn more about the women in film, and buy the whole movie if you like...

There was also an ad where only the double entendre is memorable, and the product is forgotten completely.
A tv sex-siren bimbo in a mini skirt is hitch hiking. A rugged blue-singlet tattoed truckie stops. She smiles upwards and says: 'Are you going all the way?'.

Then of course who can forget Sonny Pruitt and Will Chandler in the Movin' On series from around 1974, another one of my favourites.
