John Paul College’s food van has been dubbed the ‘Community Companion’ for good reason.
An initiative of staff, parents and students, the van provides food for the needy.
College faith and mission director John Riddle said 7100 people had received help since the van started four years ago.
It operates on Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm, but Mr Riddle said it would expand to Thursdays next year.

Kebabs for everyone! Melbourne food van wins against petrol giant 22 December 2018.

A little kebab van in Melbourne’s south-east has had a win against petrol giant Caltex.
Employees at Glenny Kebabs, situated on the petrol station’s Springvale Road block in Glen Waverley, turned up to work earlier this month and found themselves barricaded out.
“We had everything inside still,” owner Asad Syed said.
“Salads, meat, sauces, everything.”
Caltex claimed that by placing tables and chairs in front of the van and allowing a large number of cars to park there, Glenny Kebabs posed a safety risk. The site, Caltex also argued, isn’t approved for use as a restaurant.
But Mr Syed took Caltex to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last week and won an injunction, which allowed him to re-open.
“I needed to reopen and the main thing was the staff. We’ve got 28 staff who need to work so, until we open, they didn’t have an income,” he said.
His lawyer Mark Sehler, from Armour Legal, said Caltex took over the lease at the site last year, but hadn’t raised any issues until they began issuing breach notices relating to the chairs and parking late this year.
“Essentially, they were punishing our client for running a successful business,” Mr Sehler said.
"This is a great win and early Christmas present for Glenny Kebabs."

Known for its halal snack packs and discounts for students (Mr Syed’s own high school nickname was ‘kebab’ because he ate one every day), Glenny Kebabs developed somewhat of a cult following in the south-east.
“We stepped away from your typical kebab shop experience. We don’t have late night drunks here. We don’t have troublemakers in this area anyhow...the food is obviously exceptional as well,” Mr Syed said.
But it's not all smooth, doner kebab spinning ahead for Mr Syed, 29. He said the conditions now in place - so no more tables and chairs and only two spaces for parking - are too restrictive so he will look for a new site.
“We can’t have that vibe here anymore. The atmosphere is what made us, so we’re hoping that’s not what breaks us either,” he said.

And a final decision is still to be made by VCAT as well, in which the tribunal will rule in February on whether Glenny Kebabs is operating under a lease or licence.
His lawyers have argued it operates like a lease, therefore Mr Syed has rights and small business owners like him can’t be shut-out so suddenly.
His is not the first kebab van to encounter legal problems.
The well-known Brunswick Town Hall Kebab on Sydney Road, once visited by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, was evicted in September after the land it was parked on was bought by the Anglican church who planned to develop a community space.

I should not have read this story at this time of night, it has made me crave for one of the kebabs. Sad that Caltex thought they had to do this to the guy and hopefully he will survive along with his staff.

Please send one of each to our Can on the move for the next week or to Coopernook when we get home!

Six new Melbourne outdoor playgrounds and food truck parks for summer December 18 2019 [just the four which have trucks/vans]
Welcome to Brunswick opening night.

If you've been looking for a good time in the great outdoors without leaving the city, Melbourne has turned out six new places to eat and drink al fresco, from a rooftop farm to a floating pool.
From the crew behind Welcome to Thornbury comes Welcome to Brunswick, a food truck park and eco-friendly brewery in collaboration with Manly's 4 Pines, just behind Brunswick Mess Hall. As per its Northcote counterpart, the food offering comes care of a rotating line-up of food trucks and stalls such as Mr Burger, and Pasta Face. Tap beers are exclusively 4 Pines, but there are other bottles and cans, plus wine, and jugs of cocktails too. welcometobrunswick.com.au
On Elgin Street Carlton, From the Collective is a bar and provedore by James Carlin of Tooboorac Hotel and Brewery. The 800-square-metre former scrap metal yard warehouse sells jams, smallgoods, chocolate and more, but only from regional Victorian producers, providing a cellar door service. These goods are also used to create a range of dishes served from the on-site food truck. The menu changes almost daily, but expect Tooborac pies, grilled sausages with sauerkraut or roasted stone fruits with crumble. There's also beer from Red Duck in Ballarat, Shedshaker in Castlemaine and Bandicoot in Echuca. fromthecollective.com.au
Park Melbourne is a new garden and arts hub in Chinatown. Photo: Park Melbourne
In the CBD, a former carpark in Chinatown has been transformed into Park Melbourne, an evolving garden bar and arts and culture venue. A collaboration between Cast of Falcons director Maz Salt (Section 8, Ferdydurke, Henry's Burgers, Radar) and architects Baracco + Wright, it features trestle tables, murals from local artists and an Airstream churning out Pie Thief pies, Founder coffee, beer and cider from Furphy and Bodriggy and wine from Puncheon Bottles. During art launches, dumplings from neighbouring Shanghai Street are brought in, and they're looking to collaborate with other pop-up vendors to further extend the food offering, particularly during events. parkmelbourne.com
Fed Square's Skyline Terrace is becoming Summertime Social, an outdoor entertainment playground. Featuring caravans for hire, a pop-up chicken shop with cocktails on tap, board games, lawn games and picnics, it opens on January 3rd with live music and entertainers. summertimesocial.com.au

Glenny Kebabs, back at a new site. Possibly hut, not van. One view shows the cult cars at the cult venue on a Saturday night.

Glenny Kebabs brings back ‘Wednesday Night Chills’ as it opens in Forest Hill
After a year of controversy which nearly sent it under, one of Melbourne’s most popular kebab sellers has made a sizzling comeback, opening in a new Forest Hill location and rebooting their signature midweek event.
Whitehorse Leader December 18, 2019

Brace yourself kebab and car lovers — one of Melbourne’s most loved food trucks is expanding, and so is its signature event.
Glenny Kebabs will relaunch its ‘Wednesday Night Chills’ nights when it opens its second Melbourne venue in Forest Hill on December 18.
Owner Asad Syed was forced to close down the popular car-kebab mash up last year during his long-running feud with Caltex at the fuel giant’s petrol station on Springvale Rd.
Now, after setting up Glenny Kebabs’ new home in Glen Waverley with a restaurant at Century City Walk, he’s brought his food truck back to another spot on Springvale Rd, 5km away.
The site — on the corner of Springvale and Canterbury Rds — was a former car-yard and was bought by Mr Syed late last year.

“The reality is I’ve taken on this property for the sole purpose that we can still do cars and bikes,” he said.
“We wanted to keep that original theme, everyone’s been asking for it, and people like the outdoor environment.”
Mr Syed said there was room for 30 cars on the site and 70 off-street parking spots nearby.
Glenny Kebabs’ ‘Wednesday Night Chills’ drew car lovers from all over Melbourne at its former home.
He said along with Glenny Kebabs’ usual menu featuring kebabs and HSPs, there would be other food trucks on site selling coffee and deserts.
“It’ll be bigger and better (with) a much better parking area and more variety for customers,” Mr Syed said.
“When you create a community and it goes, it kills you.
“I’ve seen people come alone and make friends, it’s good for networking and socialising, and I want to bring that back and give people something to do on a Wednesday night.”
Mr Sayed said Glenny Kebabs Forest Hill would initially only open on Wednesdays but would gradually start trading on weekends and eventually all week.
The December 18 relaunch of ‘Wednesday Night Chills’ will be from 7pm to midnight.
