Rio Tinto have been using driverless trucks in the Pilbara and elsewhere for many years now (first on trial then in daily use). They have sensors all around them that sense people, vehicles etc in their vicinity and they just stop.
They use GPS sensors and they run over the same patch of road trip after trip, almost as consistent as a rail line. They have found they need to do more road maintenance as the trucks don't recognise pot holes so keep running straight through the hole enlarging it. The person I spoke to didn't know what happened if the side of the road washed away. I suspect the vehicle would just stop, hopefully on the remaining road

My neighbour drives the trains. He said there's no way the company will go driverless, economics aren't in it, way cheaper to have drivers.
The driverless haul packs are also costing heaps more than they predicted, but they've gone down that path so they plan to stick it out.
Think you need inside info rather than the spin they put out.
