May 10 2017. Neighbours evacuated as fire rages through Greek restaurant in South Melbourne .
The ovens inside a Greek restaurant are to blame for a large fire, which caused up to $300,000 of damage to the South Melbourne eatery, and the apartment above.
Several people on Park Street called triple zero just before 3pm on Wednesday after seeing flames rising from above the Spitiko restaurant, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.
A Spitiko employee, believed to be a chef, is seen outside the restaurant on Wednesday afternoon. Photo: Penny Stephens .
The fire is believed to have begun in the lower levels of the building, and "quickly spread through a flue into the top storey and ceiling space", the MFB said.
One man, a Spitiko employee, was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire, but he escaped and was not injured.

"The fire actually spread through a cooking area flue into the second storey ceiling space, so there's a fair bit of damage up there," MFB Commander Phil Rogan told Channel Nine.
Commander Rogan later said the fire was an accident, and started as the man was preparing the restaurant kitchen for evening service.
"The person had started up all the ovens, which is a regular process to heat them up for the evening, and then he heard an unusual noise and fire went up through the flue," he told 3AW.
The flames then spread through an upstairs apartment, causing up to $300,000 of damage, the MFB said.

Up to 12 neighbouring residents were evacuated by fire crews, Park Street was closed and trams were diverted away from the street.
The fire was brought under control at 4.15pm. By 5.30pm, the area had been declared "safe" by the MFB, and residents were allowed to return to surrounding buildings.
One witness, "Jeff", told 3AW his two-year-old girl saw the flames rising from the roof of the restaurant.
"Flames were coming out of the chimney straight away, it took over pretty quick," he said.
"My daughter, a two-year-old, actually saw it first before anyone started yelling out onto the street."
