On the road and hauling... was created by Andy Wright
I went to the Temora October flying weekend yesterday and in between shooting pics of Spitfires, Bommerangs, Mustang etc I practiced my camera panning and shooting things at speed by grabbing some of the trucks heading passed our little spot at the end of the runway. I've recently learnt some good techniques and camera settings for shooting fast-moving gear and am thinking about 'deploying' just beyond our backyard to do some more practice on the West Wyalong bypass.
Anyone interested in a couple of modern pics?

Your wish is my command, Swish. Re the camera, I tend to manage my depth of field and shutter speed for what I'm shooting i.e. how much I want in focus etc. Sometimes I get it right ... or, like half of last year's Sandown arrivals, I don't quite get everything as sharp as I like. My camera, Canon 350D, also has an AI Servo setting for the auto focus (have only just started using that setting). As you can guess, it keeps focusing on a moving subject. You still have to pan with the subject otherwise everything ends up blurred but if you get it right you get a sharp truck but still with 'blurred' wheels to indicate movement. Shooting 'sports mode' will freeze everything so it'll look like a model.
The big thing with AI Servo autofocus is that if you use the normal button for taking pics, it focuses once and then shoots - defeats the purpose of the servo setting. However, I have a * button on the back of the camera which can be set to do the autofocus. Hold this down all the time while following a subject and the camera continually focuses (you can feel the lens moving). Just have to remember to keep your thumb down while shooting the pic.
Hope some of that makes sense. Am going to try more of this tomorrow:
Not super great shots and any blurriness is due to my panning but this is what I want to try more of (complete with heat haze on the first pic). The Fliner (sorry, Pat) was doing 100kmh easy. The white blur in the bottom of the second pic is actually the roof of a car parked nearby!

Good photos Andy, there are only two buttons on my camera I can get my head around ...."on" and "auto". Do I need to be trying a bit harder?

I doubt it, Pete, as your pics are great.
It's a bit overcast and crappy today so will have to delay my practice on the bypass.

I have been using a tripod lately which solves the problem of shaky hands, especially for photos taken inside. Took some stitch ones down at Bill Richardsons this way and they have come up well. Should be in the next Monitor.

Had a few hours spare this arvo so popped over to the bypass to see what was passing through. Turned out to be a white Kenworth and white B-double combo stint so not a lot of variety but them's the breaks.
Just so Swish doesn't go in to conniptions with all the KWs, a couple of Volvos put in an appearance as well.
First truck of the day was a local chap. Practice is practice.
One of the more interesting beasties of the day - non-white cabover KW ( ) with a varied load. Love the 'I'm Goin Nukinfuts'.
Didn't quite get the depth of field right today (need to go further) as can be seen in this pic - cab in focus but a*se end of the trailer just out of focus.

Caught this bloke coming back after missing him going the other way with a roller on board.
Not a great pic but thrown in as an ad for Cunning Stunt.

Now this was probably the best rig of the session and I stuffed the pic up. Grill out of focus - need to adjust the focal point further forward - middle sorted and back end out of focus (depth of field again). Ah well.
