G'day all, im seriously considering a career change, I currently work in the rail industry, its treated me well, but the itch has remained since the bobcat & D series 20 years ago.

Im thinking tandem drive, heart says GM, head says cat or cummins,

Not real fussy, is there the work?

I really got the burn after talking with the fellas that excavated across the road from me, old plastic cabbed A and a ford stirling type banger,
didnt get numbers, but they loved the work.

Im in melbourne.
Open to suggestions, floggings etc

Thanks in advance.

Scrarcha So if nothing is done you might be itching for another 17 or 18 years.
The best thing about your career change is that you will be your own boss and it will be you and the bank manager to answer too .
I am not able to advise you whether too or not but been your own boss gives you a bit more freedom but might cause headaches.

I wish all the best on what ever the decision

scratcha,
I don't know about Melbourne.....but ....in Sydney....
I don't know of a better way to go broke.
Owning a tipper (& dog) up here would have to be the most
cut throat situation you could ever find...............however................
it all depends on who you get in with,..........so .......
do your home work well before you commit.....

In the current economic climate, I'd be very careful, I'm finding it the hardest it's been for well over ten years at present. Everyone's got work if you want to wear your gear out and work for nothing, it'd be even worse if you have a finance company leaning on you.

Scratcha,
If you decide to look for a tipper,
i have a real good Louie with a 350 bigcam and 15sp RR that would suit you well.
I have owned it for 15 years and just do not use it enough now.
I am in construction and have used it on my larger jobs, with site cuts, cleanups and landscaping, but i am slowing down things now a days.
It would be a small investment to get you going.
Jim

I'll second exactly what Billy P has stated. I'm also in Sydney area in the building industry ( but not truck and dog tippers). You also have the wet weather (same in any state I guess) with no work. Also some grubs go "broke," and others go Phoenix, some just don't pay for 90 days, and some just don't pay.

Thanks wombat, ill keep you in mind if I end up going that way, Where are you based?

Overnight, funny how you forget these things, I had a couple of non payers, (subbied to a big civil crowd mostly, that were good payers) But had one builder get me a beauty, a weeks work on site, blew a pump on the sunday (yep, you read correct) finishing off the job for a slab pour on the Tuesday morning , get back to site around 10 after kitting it out, to see another bobcat n tipper operator loading his machine on his truck, "what are you up to I ask?, he says got a call for a hour job for cash, quick tidy up, couldn't knock back!

I go in and see the builder, he wont pay me coz I didn't complete the job!, that's business he says! walks off!

Bet he was surprised in the morning when some "mongrel" had tipped 20 cubic metres of dirty fill in the driveway and the agi's couldn't get in! :woohoo:

He even had the gall to ring me and ask if id come quick and get rid of it for him!
